Bird of Wilson was elected president of the North Carolina Catholic Laymen's Association at their annual convention which ended here yesterday.
A $60,000 Mount Airy community center funded by local contributions was dedicated yesterday. John M. Steves, principal donor, honored his parents and two brothers. Charlotte and Raleigh officials attended as Rep Thure Hoey and Rep Chatham were noted attendees. North Carolina Civilian Distinguished Citizenship Award to Robert L. Doughton announced at district banquet.
A York Rite session in Rocky Mount discusses a 1952 proposal to adopt a new system of counting or valuing orders. Shifts in ritual or lodge procedures are considered during the meeting attended by lodge members from Raleigh and surrounding areas.
Civil Air Patrol ground crews depart to locate traces of a missing yellow Stinson plane that crashed Saturday. Aerial observers yesterday spotted what was believed to be the aircraft as part of a two day area search. G FIG equipment of the State Highway Commission will be handed to the Board of Awards in a separate action to decide on gasoline purchases.
The Associated Press reports at least nine fatalities over the weekend across North Carolina. Victims include Grover Powell and Richard Cross in Asheboro, Wilfred Rudisill in Lincolnton, James C. Long in Manteo, Andrew J. Bristow in Roanoke Rapids, Harry L. Loftin Jr. near Mt. Holly, Wanda Ayers in Mt. Airy, Winifred Meredith near North Wilkesboro, and James T. Pearson who drowned in a Lake Lawndale incident.

Former chief tax collector Joseph D Nunan Jr testifies before a House panel in Washington on constitutional grounds refusing to reveal the source of cash used in several transactions during his government service. He says he received only his government salary and has practiced law since June 1947.
In Whiteville Judge Conan Laa ruled that the grand jury which indicted 27 defendants including 13 Klansmen was unauthorized. He excused the panel after finding the local rotation law invalid and stated the grand jury had no authority to act. The ruling adjourned a criminal term and prompts new indictments or bills in related flogging cases.
Washington reports say President Truman seeks a base to resume White House talks between the steel industry and CIO Steelworkers after the Supreme Court intervened. CIO President Murray says no strike plans and warns of possible protests while officials weigh seizure legality.

More than 800000 voters are expected as Kefauver campaigns from New York to Florida and Rudolph Halley supports Kefauver. The Florida primary tests Russell’s strength before the national convention amid Kefauver’s campaign pace and a side debate with Warren.
In Paris John Foster Dulles urged that Western powers publicly warn Russia and Red China they will answer armed aggression with full military might. He argued a preemptive threat would deter aggression, stressing US policy must not mirror an ostrich attitude despite election implications.
Washington reports the Eisenhower camp predicting Taft will regain the lead in Ohio where 56 delegates are at stake. Carlson says Taft will gain but Eisenhower momentum will soon eclipse it with 60s-era delegates.
