British troops and police manhunt 227 prisoners after a mass breakout from Acre prison. Sixteen killed including 11 mothers of the underground. 251 of 555 inmates fled north of Haifa with many wounded and captured. Army cordons and wide-area searches followed as villages and highways were restricted.
The United States rejected Russian demands for Jews to have a full floor voice in the United Nations Palestine debate. A Moscow backed plan showed wavering as an alternative sought a Jewish hearing in committee rather than plenary sessions. A joint Slav Latin American proposal would grant the Jewish agency a hearing in the general assembly's committee.
New York May 5 Henry Mayer counsel for some unions of the National Federation of Telephone Workers said a nationwide strike might settle by nightfall. NFTW regional committee and officials' drive to end the dispute point to an imminent settlement. Mayer cited AT&T Long Lines officials who would review a federal proposal for a $5.14 weekly wage increase.
North Carolina telephone strike news from Raleigh reports workers did not return to posts despite a union vote ordering a return. Governor Cherry's deadline for normal service looms, with talk he may intervene again. District Manager notes few returning employees at the Southern Bell Raleigh office.
Governor Cherry urged striking North Carolina telephone workers to return to work, gaining compliance in Asheville and Goldsboro while Raleigh union members rescinded a return vote and attended a mass meeting. The governor’s office indicated a late statement would follow.
FE A Clement said he did not know what happened as workers rallied at Pullen Park. In four major cities Greensboro Winston Salem Charlotte and Wilmington unions voted to stay on strike while Raleigh and the Asheville area returned to work. Southern Bell offered $1 to $3 per week raise, rejected by the union.

L. BE. Parris resigned as chair man of the Charlotte local of the National Federation of Telephone Workers union and reported back to work today. J. KR. Burnie was elected chairman of local 608 to succeed Parris, and FE. H. Wasson said Parris had returned. Burnie noted 12 plant workers returned today, with Wasson saying many more reported for work. The union said 12 of 672 who went on strike last April 7 returned.
Lawmen comb rugged brush near Fort Gay West Virginia as they hunt Oliver Hurley 40 named by a coroner jury as killer of four relatives including his three year old son. Two other children aged nine months and 18 months were wounded in the same attack.
Wayne West Virginia May 5 Prosecuting attorney Floyd Harrison said Oliver Hurley the man hunted after the Fort Gay quadruple killings was killed today by a special investigator from Harrison office An undertaker is en route with the body and details remain unavailable.
State police said no trace of Hurley was found after an all night search in the border district. Sheriff Crown linked the shooting to mad jealousy over Hurley’s estrangement from his wife. Victims include Susie Billups Hurley and her son Jay Hurley, Nora Belle Skeens, William Hurley, with Lawrence Skeens and Aileen Hurley hospitalized in Louisa Kentucky. Lawrence in critical condition.
Pinehurst May 5. Establishment of additional dental schools in the south may be necessary to meet an increasing public demand for more dental health services. Dr Harlan H Horner of Chicago secretary of the Council on Dental Education of the American Dental Association said here today.
The House postponed the opening of debate on a 400 million dollar aid bill for Greece and Turkey after the death of Rep. Charles L. Gerlach. Leaders adjourned to honor him as the foreign affairs committee weighs whether aid will halt communism or prompt war. The Senate already approved the bill 67 to 23.
Senator Taft of Ohio urged state and house Republicans to decide how far to expand government activity this year in social security housing health and education. He will form a subcommittee to align GOP policy with a House group while aiming to cut Truman budget. Secretary Marshall convened leaders to discuss cutting funds for cultural relations overseas broadcasts.
The minerals research laboratory at North Carolina State College in Asheville was dedicated with former Governor J. Melville Broughton as the chief speaker. Other speakers included Chancellor J. W. Harrelson and TVA board member J. P. Pope. The project cost about $85,900 with $25,000 in equipment provided by the Tennessee Valley Authority.
United States accepts the compromise only if Jews are restricted to witnesses before the 55 nation political committee. Soviet bloc seeks full hearing, or at least a hearing by the political committee if majority agrees. Steering committee recommendation, backed by US and Britain, leaves the hearing decision to the political committee and bars agency applicants from full plenary sessions.
Several senators urged Moscow to back Stalin’s pledge to cooperate in peace efforts with concrete deeds rather than words. Senator Hatch said Soviet cooperation must be demonstrated with full state backing for world prosperity before he trusts the pledge.
In Huntington West Virginia Paul Midkiff reported his coat stolen from a cafe. A days later a call led him to a letter guiding him to a railway station locker where the coat was found.
Harold E Stassen argues against arming Greece for an all-out offensive against mountain guerrillas. He backs the Senate approved aid but cautions it should not trigger a civil war. He urges building a stable Greek regime to counter communism and questions Truman’s global foray. He released transcript of a Stalin interview as part of his remarks.
DEWITT MACKENZIE analyzes Stalin’s interview with Harold Stassen noting a possible willingness to cooperate between Russia and the United States and Western democracies. He warns suspicion may erode the will to cooperate and urges watchful waiting as factions doubt each other’s intent.
Izvestia accuses U S Secretary of State Gen C Marshall of an incorrect appraisal of the Moscow foreign ministers conference in a radio address. The paper also charges John Foster Dulles with distorting the facts in his conference summary.
The House appropriations committee recommended a 23 percent cut to the 1948 budget for State Commerce Justice and Federal Judiciary totaling 535 million. The omnibus supply bill to the House floor seeks tighter spending with a warning against a spending psychology and lists specific department reductions.
Washington May 5 The nationwide telephone strike nears five weeks as federal mediators explore a two way path. AT&T long lines may counter with a wage proposal while Southwestern Bell and the Southwestern Telephone Workers union may begin wage discussions. A.T.&T. official George Dring signals possible progress as talks shift between Washington and St. Louis following a late April return.
Four persons died violently in North Carolina over the weekend. J Ray Shute NT 21 and Gerald A Simpson 22 of Monroe died Sunday when their light plane crashed near Waxhaw. James Baker 30 a Charlotte resident was stabbed to death in front of the fire station. Lillie Nelson a Negro woman was detained after signing a statement that she stabbed Baker following a brick attack. Joseph Luke Hicks 33 a Troy garage mechanic died in Albemarle hospital from injuries in an automobile crash last Monday.
In Wroclaw Poland forty thousand Germans on state owned estates in Lower Silesia are to be repatriated to Germany. Poles will take over their jobs as part of the resettlement affecting about 2,500,000 acres and 70 percent of local labor.
