The Senate Military Committee approved a capital draft bill to mobilize wealth for a war loan. A wealth census would set a graded bond purchase, starting at five percent of net wealth for 1 000 to 10 000 and rising to seventy five percent above 100 000 000, with possible adjustment by the treasury.
Dwindling funds forced the Methodist Uniting Conference to adjourn early, setting May 10 as the final day. Other items report subway curtailments in New York over coal shortages, sale of The Courier in Asheboro to Washington residents, Italy boosting military estimates for a quick war, and ten three year olds entering the Kentucky Derby field led by Johnstown.

Raleigh May 5 James Dixon a 38 year old Negro from Cabarrus County died in the state prison gas chamber for the murder of his wife on October 9 1938 Dixon did not deny the crime but asked the chaplain to correct the impression that he was drunk The death occurred at 10 46 after the gas switch was turned on at 10 31 and the chamber was in use for 14 minutes 42 seconds Cabarrus County witnesses included H V Hanners Wesley Plyler Albert Parham and J F Brinkley of Kannapolis and Bertie Ball and W C Heglar of Concord one newsman fainted during the execution
