Close Vote Expected On Day Care Bill Override
Washington backers of a 125 million day care bill seek a two thirds vote to override President Ford as the House votes today. Ford has vetoed 48 bills with eight overrides. The bill would suspend current staffing standards and boost social services funds by 225 million through September 30, distributing funds by population and need to meet new standards. Ford says the bill shifts responsibility to states and would raise costs without expanding access. Backers say extra funding is needed to meet standards and aid working mothers.
