In Alabama, Lurleen Wallace defeats nine male rivals in the Democratic primary, avoiding a runoff and positioning for the November gubernatorial race. Richmd Flowers loses ground as Wallace aides imply continued strong influence by her husband in state government.
Atty Gen Nicholas Katzenbach testifies at the House Judiciary subcommittee as Congress begins hearings on a 1966 civil rights act. The measure includes a fair housing ban, new federal penalties for racial violence, juror desegregation, and federal tools to end school segregation. He argues housing discrimination violates the 14th Amendment and impeded equality.
Henry Ford II, chairman of the nation’s second largest automaker, told AP that the auto industry should have done more earlier to promote highway safety. He said congressional hearings on auto safety are educating the public, and the industry could have acted sooner and more decisively.

Jamestown Republican Thorp Thompson, candidate for the North Carolina House, publicly acknowledged two years of membership in the United Klans of America. Guilford County party officials had learned of the affiliation only after he filed. Thompson said he would not resign unless forced to do so and likened Klan membership to pride in other fraternal groups. The report notes Guilford now has a second candidate with Klan ties, following Democrat Eloral Hennis, a former exalted cyclops who is jailed on a 90 day term for restitution damages from a 1989 pickup incident. The state Supreme Court denied a writ review, and Thompson faces campaign hurdles as the race proceeds.
Sandra Marshburn stands trial in Wake County Superior Court on charges of assaulting her husband Joseph Marshburn's girlfriend. Prosecutors say she used scissors to shear the victim's hair during a November incident, with testimony placing Marshburn at the rural home where a pistol was allegedly held.
The Defense Department rejected Sen. Ernest Gruening's charge that Army surplus disposal harms Vietnam war equipment. The Pentagon stated the Army annually disposes of about 4.6 billion dollars of obsolete gear to maintain a 122 billion dollar inventory, and that soldiers receive the best equipment.
