At 2 PM only 353 residents have voted in the city election, with two precincts recording just four ballots each. No write ins or opposition tickets appeared, and city employees showed the strongest turnout amid a predicted total under 1,000 votes. Polls stay open to sunset.
Margaret Mitchell learned her Civil War novel Gone With The Wind won the Pulitzer Prize with modest words saying I’m astounded and I’m overwhelmed. The prize carried 1000 dollars and added to her literary fame after 1,350,000 copies had already been printed.
A relief fleet races to Bilbao to save about 10,000 women and children from siege and bombardment as insurgent troops advance north of the city. 4,000 were listed to sail tonight aboard the Habana with another 4,000 to England. French steamers with 2,000 capacity prepare to join.
New York police say Leonidas Hamilikas also known as Louis Karras confessed to stabbing Irene Wadas, a Columbia Residence Club waitress found slain on April 22. He claimed he carried the nine inch knife to the club entrance hoping to win her love.
Jasper Clouse testified before the Senate Civil Liberties committee that two Harlan County deputies were paid by a coal company and shot his brother Lloyd Clouse, a Kentucky mine union organizer, after leaving a liquor shop. Other Clouse children corroborated seeing officers ambush UMW organizers.

A white pastors committee met Negro officials during cotton carnival week to discuss a mass baptism of 250 Negroes. The Memphis Ministerial Association passed resolutions protesting the planned rite to be held in a park by the Mississippi river bluff. Reverend J. J. B. J. Damich of the steel workers organizing committee announced complaints against Republic Steel Corp. have been filed with the National Labor Relations Board regional office. He cited discrimination in the firing of 100 employees across Orrigan McKinney Upson Works Truscon Steel and Steel & Tubes Inc plants.
Paul H. Wendel testified in the Newark Federal Court Conspiracy trial of Ellis H. Parker and his son Ellis Jr. He described his abduction and coerced confession to the Lindbergh kidnapping. The defense challenged his record of a perjury conviction, but the judge ruled the pardon cured disqualification.
President Roosevelt and companions enjoyed near record tarpon fishing off Port Aransas. He landed a 90-pound tarpon, his first since Saturday, and nearly hooked a second as a favorable Gulf sea aided their catch of 14 tarpon yesterday.
Reuben Schenzvit, former South American agent for Sir Basil Zaharoff, is brought to court in Jaffa for the slaying of Jacob Zwanger, ex Soviet harbor official. British intelligence links the case to a large arms smuggling network, a secret radio setup, and covert operations in Palestine.
Hollywood May 4 The central strike committee pulled back all women marchers from the picket lines around Hollywood studios. An official cited the Westmore salon attack as the reason, saying the damage reached about 15000 dollars and that the action may have been staged to sway public opinion. The Federated Motion Picture Crafts said none of its members was involved. The women may resume picketing later depending on developments.
The Tennessee Public Utilities Commission asked Tennessee Electric Power to show cause why it has not expanded its electricity-producing facilities amid a possible Nashville power shortage. The commission says there is probability of a shortage and may order purchase of power from the Tennessee Valley Authority to remedy the situation.
Wake County commissioners voted unanimously to ask the board of elections to order a referendum on establishing liquor stores under the 1937 local option law. Election officials indicated June 22 as the voting date.
Secretary Perkins proposed expanding state labor mediation services to settle and prevent strikes during the development of collective bargaining. She noted the Wagner Act as law and urged cooperation among state and federal agencies to assist employers and workers lacking experience in bargaining.

In Monts France on May 4 Edward Duke of Windsor and Wallis Simpson were reunited at Castle De Cande after five months apart. The couple arrived by train and car amid guards and officials, as Simpson greeted the Duke on the chateau doorstep and they entered arm in arm.
In New Castle Kentucky on May 4 the closed trial of Gen Henry H Denhardt over the murder of his fiancée continued as rain drummed on a tin roof. Prosecutor J Wirt Turner opened with Sergeant John I Messmer's testimony while defense counsel Rodes K Myers argued against politicization and presented parraffin test results indicating Denhardt fired a weapon shortly before the widow's death, with tests also suggesting she had not.
Mrs. Carrie Duncan died from injuries after being struck by a car on the New Buncombe road. Wheeler Thackston, a dairyman reported as the driver, was placed under technical arrest. Coroner George W. McCoy scheduled an inquest for 3 p m Thursday.
