A commercial jetliner carrying 57 passengers and six crew ditched in heavy rain about 33 miles east of St. Croix. Coast Guard helicopters rescued 30 to 40 survivors, with evacuees to Roosevelt Roads Navy hospital. The cutter Point Whitehorn and carrier Guadalcanal led aid, aided by three nearby merchant ships.
Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird outlined a widening plan to strike enemy sanctuaries in Laos Cambodia and South Vietnam with air and ground interdiction. Democrats Alton Lennon and Walter Jones, the sole NC incumbents in Congress to face challengers, won their primaries. Lennon defeated Charles Rose III in the 7th District, while Jones beat L. C. Nixon in the 1st District. Lennon will face Republican L. C. Flowers or Frederick R. Weber in November. Hawke won the 4th District GOP nomination to oppose incumbent Nick Galifianakis. Jones enters a three way race against R. Frank Everett and Gene Leggett in the 1st District northeastern district.
On many campuses the peace movement revived as Nixon announced troop actions in Cambodia. Stanford faced clashes and shots at ROTC, while Harvard and UC leaders criticized the move. VA Military Institute alumni backed it, Princeton saw protests, and ADA urged impeachment proceedings.
