Covered Bridges in North Carolina and Randolph County Occur

North Carolina House Eyed Lower Voting Age Bills

California Capitol siege by Black Panther members shocks lawmakers

In Sacramento a dozen Black Panther Party members entered the Capitol with loaded firearms during a noon session. Bobby Seale, 25, defended guns as a constitutional right while criticizing Oakland police. Twenty six youths aged 17 to 25 were arrested for sawed off shotguns and brandishing weapons. Lawmakers called for tighter security and harsher penalties.

Pope Will Fly to Fatima to Pray for Peace in Asia

Pope Paul VI announced a May 13 one day trip to Fatima Portugal to pray for peace and urge end to the Vietnam war. He spoke to thousands at his weekly audience lamenting the world’s lack of peace and urged acceptance of new peace proposals with mediation and safeguards for Southeast Asia. This will be his fourth international journey in four years visiting Holy Land India and New York.

Johnson Rules Out Compulsory Arbitration On Rail Strike

President Johnson rejected compulsory arbitration to avert a nationwide rail strike and said Congress may be asked to provide mediation machinery later this week. He offered no troop increase recommendations for Vietnam and warned against antiwar rhetoric. He backs a six percent tax surcharge and warned against drastic changes to school aid. A 90 day no lockout period with a five member board would guide mediation and possible settlement efforts.
