Tar Heel Economy Grows In March For Fourth Month
North Carolina business activity rose for the fourth straight month as the Wachovia Index hit 138.4 in March, up 0.2 from February and 4.8 higher than a year ago. Bank debits rose 64 percent, employment largely held steady, with an adjusted unemployment rate of 6.7 percent. Textile employment led gains in durable goods while nondurable goods fell, textiles staying the state's largest employer at about 268,800. Overall non farm employment edged down 0.2 percent for the month but remained 31 percent above March 1975.
