Washington reports that all new TVs must receive 82 channels, up from 12. The 1962 law aims to expand program variety as 70 UHF channels allow thousands more stations. Options exist to add UHF tuners or convert existing sets, with no mandatory new purchase.

Candor NC AP Carl Alfred president of the North Carolina Peach Growers Association says some peaches will reach market this year despite a freeze that nearly wiped out the crop. About 100000 bushels are expected from southern Montgomery and northern Richmond counties, area last year shipped a million. Most survivors are Marcus variety, an early yellowstone. Picking will start in about three weeks.
Charlotte AP C. A. Cannon chairman of Cannon Mills Co. testifies before a U.S. Department of Agriculture hearing, arguing that an equalization payment to mills would raise costs and undermine the single cotton price system. He warns such payments would force mills to buy at or above support price and incur extra interest and insurance costs, costing over 290 million dollars annually in a nine million bale scenario.
