Mopeka Kansas May 1 W J Nich formerly a member of the North Carolina legislature has lost his bid for return to South Carolina facing a federal indictment in the operation of a farm loan program. Federal Judge Pollock denied a request as the marshal began the South Carolina to Oklahoma leg of the case. Nich was indicted in 1910 for using the mails to defraud and later convicted in Oklahoma, sentenced to Leavenworth. He completed serving in March 23 and was turned over at the prison gates for the old indictment.
A May 1 AP report from Havas agency says Turkish troops on Gallipoli are gradually isolated from Turkish Thrace and can no longer pass between shores. The main Turkish army is positioned between Gallipoli and Maidos.
Gen. Charles S. Peyton, the last surviving Confederate field officer from Gettysburg, is in serious condition at his Ronceverte home after suffering a paralytic stroke. He commands the West Virginia division of the United Confederate Veterans.
Cincinnati May 1 The National baseball commission refused to reinstate Renny Kauff the Brooklyn Federal league player who aligned with the New York National league team on Thursday.
Jacques Fourier of the White Sox tops the American league with a .463 average in today’s published figures. Highs also include Veach .428 and Cobb .420, with Cobb leading nine stolen bases. Heinie Groh leads the National League at .429, with Luderus .425 and Connolly .407 among others. Eddie Lennox of Pittsburgh tops the Federal league, with Westerzill of Brooklyn at .476 second.
Salisbury May 1 Mrs Hastline an elderly white woman of Troutman Iredell county was fatally injured today when she fell onto a running wood saw. She died instantly and has a son in Salisbury. Details of the horrifying accident were not available this afternoon.

Royston Virginia May 1 Tom Coles a Black man was tried and convicted within minutes for the assault of 15 year old Vicorina Royster daughter of Mrs L T Royster of Mecklenburg county He was immediately sentenced to die in the electric chair on June 4 and taken to Petersburg jail for safekeeping
Cincinnati May 1 Application for reinstatement of Benny Kauff of the Brooklyn Federal League team was before National Commission Chairman Hermann. Kauff had signed a New York National League contract Thursday and discussions were ongoing with National League President Tener and American League President Johnson. Hermann indicated a player who has twice violated his contract is not desirable in baseball.
Berlin dispatch from Constantinople via wireless says French forces pushed from the Asiatic side of the Dardanelles and Gallipoli is cleared of Allies except Gaba Tepe. Allied bombardment April 27 28 killed and wounded Turkish officers. French Jeanne d Arc and British Majestic Triumph and Vengeance damaged and sent to Venedos. several destroyers and transports sunk.
