Treasury push for deeper earned income tax cuts
The treasury backs further tax relief on earned income and urges simpler administration of tax laws. Since 1917 the Internal Revenue Service collected about 39 billion dollars and assessed over four billion in back taxes, refunding under one billion. Critics complain about large refunds, but officials note taxes paid by individuals and corporations run into hundreds of millions with only a small portion refunded. Mellon credits the Federal Reserve system for smooth refunding and short-term borrowing in 1928.
