Voters in Greensboro and High Point show slow turnout at midday amid bad weather and unclear issue. About 2,000 of 7,000 registered in Greensboro and around 400 to 450 of 1,636 in High Point had cast ballots by noon with organizers optimistic turnout would rise after 4 pm as factories close and Boy Scouts aid efforts.
Relatives in Greenwood, South Carolina would press for a vigorous probe into the Thursday night shooting of A. A. Tarrant by Charlotte city detectives. Police say a gunbattle occurred. Tarrant denies possessing a weapon and remains in serious condition at a local hospital. Officers found whiskey in his car. Solicitor John G. Carpenter was to carry out the investigation.
In New York on March 30 the stock market recovered after three weeks of declines. The first half hour saw scores of issues rise 2 to 5 points as an irregular lower opening gave way to renewed buying amid liquidation and weak margins.
Dr J Franklin Forbes, first president of Deland academy and Stetson university, died in Rochester after a brief illness with influenza. Born in Middlesex New York in 1853, he led prominent Florida institutions.

The Cranford case is not on today’s Stanly County docket and is expected to be rescheduled for tomorrow. Prosecutors indicate they will seek an outside jury for the conviction boss trial.
N C Cranford, former convict boss, remains free on bond as the state postpones the murder trial of two 1918 Stanly County jail inmates James Howell and James Terry. Solicitor Don Phillips says only minor cases proceed today and Cranford may be tried tomorrow. The defense plans to call physicians and morticians. prosecutors seek a different county jury.
Luther Burbank aged 77, famed horticulturist, remained bedbound in Santa Rosa California as doctors reported his illness as doubtful for recovery. His nurse staff and doctor noted extreme nervousness and a strong wish to return to garden work while his heart attack last Thursday is linked to his fragile condition.

Daniel Cagle of Randolph County died at his home on Filbert Street yesterday afternoon. Funeral services were held at the family residence at 10:30 this morning conducted by Rev. E. J. Harrison. The body was taken to Union Christian church in Randolph County for burial. He was born in Randolph County and ran a farm before moving here. In Charlotte on March 30 an official inquiry opened into the shooting of A A Tarrant by city officers following a late Thursday night stop on the Salisbury highway. Solicitor J G Carpenter pledged to reveal all facts as Commissioner Robertson produced a pistol said to have been taken from Tarrant. Tarrant denies possessing a weapon and doctors report a wound in his back. Guy Tarrant of Columbia S C, brother of the wounded man, arrived with a Columbia attorney to assist in the inquiry.
A hearing in Raleigh before referee J B Cheshire Jr examines whether Ivanhoe Mills, under receiver, owes the government excess profits taxes. The government seeks about 310000 total with a 50 percent penalty. receivership auditors say no tax due. The proceeding was ongoing at 2 pm.
