A boiler explosion at the Terra Cotta plant in Pomona injures several workers and traps two men in debris. One identified dead as Willie Butler of Greensboro. Fire officials say debris and a blown chimney hinder search while the cause remains undetermined.
Argentine armed forces depose President Arturo Frondizi in a bloodless coup sending him to Martin Garcia Island. Senate President Jose Maria Guido is named as successor though unclear if he will assume full powers.
A dull underground explosion at 2 20 a m fractured a 20 foot long steel feeder pipe in Greensboro causing about 16000 Piedmont Natural Gas customers in Greensboro and Burlington to lose gas service. Restoration began late afternoon with 100 workers assessing outlets in 16632 homes and industries. No injuries were reported.
Picket lines formed by office workers seeking union recognition halted work at three Atlas missile sites near Plattsburgh Air Force Base in New York. Union vice president Leo Wallace said four laid off workers, all organizers, were not rehired, replaced instead, prompting the action. The Senate Investigations subcommittee urged curbs on missile base strikes and faulted contractors for rackets in leasing tools and real estate as it prepared a wider inquiry.
Justice Charles Evans Whittaker retires effective April 1 amid ill health. President Kennedy announced the first Kennedy appointment to the high court, noting Whittaker’s long service since 1957 and his earlier roles as U S district judge in Missouri and appeals judge in the Eighth Circuit.

Two F8U Marine jets from the Marine Photo Reconnaissance Squadron collided during a routine training flight near Cherry Point North Carolina. Captain Robert W. Tucker Jr. ejected and was rescued with minor injuries. Major Walker E Domina landed safely with no injuries. Tucker is from Havelock and Domina is from Keene New Hampshire.
Ed die Fisher left Gracie Square Hospital after a rest period with a spokesman denying a nervous breakdown. Miller Blackstone, Fisher’s manager, said he went to a friend’s Manhattan home and planned a short rest until Friday. Louis Nizer issued a statement that Fisher is simply resting for a few days at a general hospital.
Eddie Fisher departed a New York hospital after reports of a nervous breakdown tied to his marriage collapse with Liz Taylor. Milton Blackstone says there’s nothing mentally wrong with him as Taylor films Cleopatra in Rome.
