Allied report from March 29 notes German advances near Morlincize and Montdidier were repelled through heavy counterattacks. British and French forces maintained positions, won ground in spots, and took prisoners while suffering heavy enemy losses amid persistent combat along the Somme and Montdidier sectors.
Paris reports General Pershing met with General Foch at headquarters and placed the entire American army at the disposal of Allied command. He said the American people would be honored to fight in the present battle and that all infantry artillery and aviation were available as needed.
French and British troops hold the arc river line north of Montdidier and maintain pressure on German columns between Laon and Le Pere. Long range artillery fire dispersed infantry convoys near Laon and Le Pere, with continued activity along the front and corpses found around Montdidier and Prelliers-de-Rove as evidence.
Tonight at the high school auditorium Marion Nash and Arthur Holeman affirm compulsory arbitration of labor disputes for Winston-Salem high school. Opposing pairs from Reidsville and High Point prepare arguments with judges Dr. George R. Brown J. J. Parriss and Col. Wescott Roberson.
Mrs T Adelaide Goodno president of the state W C T U spoke at a 3 pm parlor meeting at Mrs J Edward Kirkmans home on Washington street. She will address the citys young people at 7 30 pm in the Sunday school room urging tasks for service to men in uniform. Older citizens may attend but must yield seating.
Major General J Franklin Bell testified before the senate military committee that the British withdrawal before the German advance was executed according to pre arranged plans and that the action is “all over now.” He said allies anticipated German preparations early and prepared to meet the drive. General Bell had just returned from the front.
Mayor William P. Ragan, a longtime Republican, says he may enter the race now held by John C. Bower for solicitor of the twelfth judicial district. He notes strong Republican support in Stokes, Davidson, Forsyth, and Guilford counties and hints he could run if Democrats organize.
A self described government inspector named T. B. Washburn was seized by police in the city shortly before noon while inspecting drug stores. He claimed to be recruiting for government work and was taken to the municipal station after a disorderly arrest marked D and D. The incident raises questions about charges and impersonating an officer.
Two fifth grade classes at Main Street School held essay contests on The Evils of Cigarette Smoking judged by W C T U members. Winners were Mary Musee in Miss Marshall room and Mozelle Brown in Miss Stout room who will advance to the principal prize competition.
Private William C. Reid of Company A, 120th Infantry, convicted by a general court martial of desertion and fraudulent enlistment. He left his unit October 28 and remained at large until November 10, later captured, sentenced to two years hard labor at Fort Jay, forfeiture of pay, and a dishonorable discharge on release.
President Wilson telegraphed California Governor William D Stevens seeking executive clemency for Thomas J Mooney who remains under a death sentence Mooney was convicted over a bomb explosion during a San Francisco preparedness parade in July 1916.
Front dispatch reports German counter thrusts aimed at dislodging Petain's troops from positions protecting Paris failed. Montdidier and the Somme sector saw resistance stiffen, while British lines north of the Somme held and halted German attempts to threaten Arras. London hints at Franco British command with Foch in a key role as fighting continues along the Avre and Somme triangle.
New Bern March 20 Totleman vice president and general manager of the Home Telephone Co eastern North Carolina and parts of Virginia met instant death when he touched a heavily charged electric wire while inspecting the pole atop the telephone exchange moving to new quarters. He had come to New Bern to oversee the relocation and was at the top of a pole preparing to run a cable into the new exchange.
The First Baptist Church will conduct its annual mission day service this Sunday morning. A. F. Tate announces the Sunday School will combine with the church in a program emphasizing mission work. Rev. James A. Clarke will preach on the topic. The event invites the public to attend and learn about mission progress.
J. W. Holman, a traveling salesman from Glen Alle y Va, was seriously hurt when his light roadster overturned near Thomasville yesterday. He suffered several broken ribs and facial and hand lacerations, was pulled from the wreck by residents, and taken to High Point hospital for treatment where he rested well overnight.
News arrives that G R Adamson prominent Bremen Ga merchant and father of Mrs Geo R Brown of North Main street has died. He was brother of Judge Adamson and a leading citizen of the state. Funeral arrangements not specified but interment expected at Bremen tomorrow afternoon or Sunday.
Archdale resident W. M. Wilson, father of O. E. Wilson, is seriously ill at his home. He is well known in the area and has been in poor health for some time.
Democratic organization of Township 10 calls for a county convention in Greensboro on April 6 to seat all present Democrats as delegates. A Raleigh Raleigh Raleigh and a speaker from Alabama are named as parts of the drive to send a strong delegation to the state convention in Raleigh.
Washington reports the War Department approved contracts totaling 1100 for sewers and 4000 for roads at Camp Greene in Charlotte North Carolina to overcome objections to the ent angy unit. Adelaide Goodna arrives to address a Wesley Memorial Church gathering this evening.
