Atlanta official Carter ruled the final shot in the Marquette UNC Charlotte semifinal, lifting Marquette 51 to 49 as 16,086 OMNI fans and NBC viewers watched. UNC Charlotte coach Lee Rose handled the loss with composure.
Auburn University claimed the team championship at the Furman Intercollegiate Golf Tournament in Greenville led by a two-stroke second-round edge. Furman’s Bobby Bumgardner topped the field with 212 while Auburn’s Buddy Gardner and Bud Smith were two back, as the Tigers edged host Furman 868 to 872. North Carolina was third at 882.
Anderson College captured the national junior college women’s basketball championship, edging Peace College 57 55 on two free throws with nine seconds left. The Trojans finished 17 11 under first year coach Frankie Porter. North Greenville Junior College claimed third with a 94 47 win over Bergen.
