Maj. M. Hillard who organized the Committee for the Preservation of the Dismal Swamp Canal says closing the canal would hurt adjacent communities and that it has historical recreational and scenic value. The canal could be discontinued after July 1 to save $200,000 annually, and a public meeting was set for Deep Creek at 2:30 p.m. with officials including Itschner and Rep. Porter Hardy Jr. listed among attendees.
