Seven Die in Rochester Apartment Fire Tragedy

Fire trapped seven people in a Rochester near downtown duplex. Three children among the victims, six of the deceased identified as Puerto Ricans. Three others hospitalized. neighbors saw occupants leap from the second floor. Hendersonville Man Held In Slaying Case

James Stanley Allison Jr., 35, surrendered to Henderson County authorities after being sought since March 17 in the rape slaying of 18 year old Lula Bell Robinson. He is held for questioning on charges of first degree burglary and the assault in a rooming house where the victim died.

Highway Projects Debated by North Carolina Commission

Submarine Activity Rises Off U S Atlantic Coast

NATO Atlantic commander Admiral Jerauld Wright reports increased Russian submarine activity in the Atlantic and along the U S east coast. He cites more frequent submarine sightings needing surface and air assessment but offers no pinpointed hotspots. He notes Cape Canaveral as a reported area and says the Russian fleet is a threat to Atlantic defense and the continental United States.

Civil Rights Commission Budget sailed through House panel

The House Appropriations Committee approved 750000 for the Civil Rights Commission for the next fiscal year despite Southern opposition. President Eisenhower requested the sum, to begin July 1, after confirmation of members and prior use of 200000 from emergency funds. The panel tabled a prior 200000 grant until June 30 due to pending confirmations.

Damage suit filed over crane operator death at Douglas plant

The death of crane operator Marvin Comer Jones at Douglas Aircraft Corp missile plant in Charlotte a year ago leads to a $200000 damage suit against Douglas Aircraft and three of its employees. Thirty six Cuban rebels from New York held on charges of conspiracy to violate the Neutrality Act continued a hunger strike in Cameron County jail Brow nsville Texas. Four Ecuadorians also faced charges as U S agents boarded the 85 foot El Orion after a Coast Guard cutter rammed it off the Texas coast. Leader Arnoldo G Barron said the group bought arms in the United States with $20000 saved over months and claimed ties to Fidel Castro while denouncing U S aid to Batista. The men surrendered with no resistance.
