Peach Growers Prison Labor Request Denied
Raleigh March 27 A request for prison labor to aid peach growers in Richmond, Montgomery and Moore counties was denied by the state highway and public works commission. It was the first test case under the 1943 act permitting prison labor in declared labor emergencies. The commission ruled inmates cannot be spared due to a 25 percent drop in prison population and the need for convicts on enlarged prison farms. The commission advised Governor Broughton to set the state speed limit at 35 miles per hour under wartime powers.

New Potato Crop to Ease North Carolina Shortage
Raleigh March 27 The present potato shortage in North Carolina is a tight situation but will end at noon as the new crop begins to reach markets in volume according to state food distribution administrator Hillman Moody. He said the shortage is in the old crop and that 1943 potato plantings are up 17 percent over 1942, yielding about 410 million bushels to meet war and civilian needs. Moody warned of possible emergency shortages if consumers engage in scare buying in the coming weeks. The FDA has asked the Army to limit purchases to only what is necessary until the new crop stabilizes.
