Fire at Fourth Street Home Traced to Telephone Error
Flames swept a two story frame house at 307 Fourth St as the occupant struggled to reach the fire department by phone. The call misrouted between rural and local lines delaying firefighters who found two front rooms and upstairs damaged. Owner Mrs Jessie Watkins of Baltimore and her brother Ben Watkins lived there with family. Firefighters believe a downstairs closet started the blaze and spent hours containing hot spots. Joe H Bryant of High Point was jailed for four months on a drunk driving charge in a separate Greensboro Municipal Court session. Continued investigations sought the fire’s exact cause.

Jas Ehret 57 Cancer Chairman with William Boren Ill of Greensboro starts the American Cancer Society fund campaign on April 1. A High Point resident for nine years from Columbus Ohio, Ehret formerly plant manager for Englander. He is a Rotary and Traffic club ex-president, belongs to First Methodist, lives at 539 E Farrisg Ave. The bank on S Main Street offers its second floor as campaign HQ.

Liquor Blamed in Sunday Morning Road Death
The hit and run death of Ronnie Lee Edwards 29 at Highway 311 near Highway 610 is linked to heavy drinking by Edwards’ companions and the driver William Lee Myers 35. A 1952 car carried Edwards’ alleged killer and three men who admitted heavy drinking before the accident. Edwards, a Korean War veteran, died at High Point Memorial Hospital after police found a hair tuft under Myers’ car and noted the group had bought beer in Greensboro. The suspects face manslaughter and hit and run charges with bonds set and a municipal court appearance scheduled for April 5. Memorial service set at Flat Ridge Baptist Church near Mount Airy.
