Norfolk Southern freight train derailed after crossing a burning wooden trestle over Rocky River. One locomotive survived. the other fell into the river as seven freight cars followed. Two crewmen, conductor Fred Styers and flagman Marvin Leons, were believed dead. Three others injured or escaped unharmed. Investigation ongoing.
The High Point Community under Ige Clark will perform Mendelssohn Elijah at First Baptist Church Sunday at 3 30 p m. David Phibbs sings Elijah with soloists Martha Heggel soprano Joe Fisher contralto both of Winston Salem and Richard Cox tenor from High Point College faculty. A cordial invitation is extended to all who enjoy great music.
High Point church women will gather at Friends House Monday at 2 pm for a program featuring Rev. Robert G. Tuttle of First Methodist who will discuss his Cuba mission trip. All church women of High Point are invited.

Hickory Wesleyan Methodist reports strong attendance as Rev. Joan M. Williams leads nightly services at 7 30. Other revivals include First Presbyterian and Lindsay Memorial among others.
Niagara Falls engineers postponed a planned blast to break a mass of ice in the lower Niagara River. Poor visibility and freezing rain halted dynamite placement by Karl Dintruff of Rochester. Lewiston damage was estimated at 200000 dollars as the ice moved past Fort Niagara toward boats and docks.
