A distinguished guest warned that France is seriously ill across economic, optical, and spiritual lines after WWII upheaval. He urged moral and material help, citing Harold Stassen on extending credits to England, France, Greece, and Russia, while France fights to regain its former global position.
Joachim von Ribbentrop told the international military tribunal he accepted responsibility for his acts as foreign minister of Germany but pleaded innocent on all counts of the war crimes indictment. He followed Goering and Hess in opening his personal defense. The court ruled out defense evidence claiming the Versailles treaty was unjust and signed under duress. British prosecutor Sir David Maxwell Fyfe called the defense claim remote and beyond the charter.
Nobel laureate Dr. Irving Langmuir, who visited the Soviet Union last year, says the United States and the USSR may each hold enough atomic bombs in six to ten years to wipe out both sides. ATLANTIC CITY N J March 26 The Cio united auto workers convention debated today a proposal to assess the union membership in support of remaining General Motors strike The convention served notice on General Motors of united and determined support for the comparatively few strikers whose piece work dispute has kept them out of work at 175 men and as a committee examines the assessment proposal The GM strike is on the floor as the convention pauses from its political fight in the home stretch
Roy Lawrence, southern director of the textile workers union of America, outlined a $1,000,000 campaign to unionize textile, rubber, lumber, oil, clothing, chemical and other southern workers. The drive starts in about 30 days with 200 additional organizers and headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia.
Delegates tally tomorrow to decide whether R. J. Thomas remains president or is replaced by Walter Reuthers. The convention was expected to yield further fireworks on the floor today.
Philadelphia march 26 a U S district court injunction restrained the Pennsylvania state labor relations board from conducting an election among tobacco company employees at the Philadelphia plant closed by a strike since October 15. The Chic-Food Tobacco Agricultural and Allied Workers union claims representation from a May 1944 NLRB directive after a bargaining election. A final hearing on the injunction is set for April 29.
Governor Cherry will attend an informal meeting of southern governors in Lakeland Florida on Friday. He will depart Wilmington by plane for the trip accompanied by Mrs. Cherry.
Washington march 26 John L Lewis announced that 400000 miners will stop work this weekend unless a new contract is reached with bituminous operators before midnight Sunday when the current pact expires He called the operators offer a wage rise about 18 percent and a joint union industry survey of accident fund proposals but said there would be no miners bloodshed and urged no trespass on company property until a contract is in place Negotiations with soft coal operators would continue and any agreement would be made effective at the earliest possible moment The miners follow a no contract no work policy and work stoppage aims to avoid public inconvenience amid large coal stocks and high weekly output
JERUSALEM March 26 A 150 ton sailing vessel carrying 240 Jewish immigrants attempting to enter Palestine illegally was intercepted by the British destroyer Chevron last night and escorted to Haifa. A Jewish woman was gravely injured in incidents at Tel Aviv and Sarona seen as diversions to shield the landing. Several Jews were arrested and arms and explosives confiscated following the outbreaks. Earlier reports said hundreds found shelter in Tel Aviv after an illegal landing covered by a diversionary attack on the Sarona police camp.
Wake Forest College trustees meet to decide a conditional multi million dollar gift from the Reynolds foundation and possible relocation to Winston Salem possibly to Reynolda estate. The move may include a name retention and is not yet commented on by the college public relations head. Also London reports UK officials asking Soviet envoy Gromyko for facts on Iran evacuation amid UN security council discussions.
Trustees of Wake Forest college recessed for lunch without action on the proposal to move the college to Winston-Salem in exchange for a gift offer from the Reynolds Foundation. No announcement had been made by 3 o'clock this afternoon.
John A. Oats, chairman of the Fayetteville college trustees, said today’s 11 a.m. meeting could discuss an Reynolds foundation endowment proposal. Sources in Raleigh and Winston-Salem say an ultimate endowment of 25 to 40 million dollars might be established, though trustees cannot act definitively and any recommendation would need North Carolina approval.
A 14 month old blind baby in New York has gained sight after corneas from 59 year old Eve Tobey, donated after her September death, were transplanted at Presbyterian Hospital Eye Institute. The infant must stay for months of observation before final judgment on success. The baby’s name was not released. Tobey donated to help a suffering relative with eye disease in her will.
