Scott Would Remove School Amendment
Senate Republican Leader Hugh Scott urges dropping from a 24.6 billion education bill the school desegregation amendment backed by Sen. John Stennis. Nixon’s 8,900 word desegregation statement undercuts the need for the measure, Scott says, while Southern senators push to apply federal desegregation policies uniformly nationwide. The conference committee softened language, extending three-year aid programs under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act.
