Officials blame each other as 1100 workers walk out at Salisbury NC finishing plant. Pickets ring the premises after an all night talks failure. Dispute centers on temporary transfers and Saturday work amid stalled negotiations.
Evangelist Billy Graham met General Dwight D. Eisenhower in Paris for a half hour discussion of religion not politics. Graham plans to reach U S presidential candidates and urge voting before the November elections. He noted Eisenhower’s interest in rising religious activity and a 57 percent U S church membership, the highest in history. The group planned a 10 day motor tour of Germany after leaving Paris.
Gen Alfred Gruenther testified five hours behind closed doors and reassured lawmakers that Western Europe has strengthened while warning Congress that the next year's foreign aid budget of 7.9 billion dollars is crucial. He said Eisenhower’s testimony may be unnecessary as support factions waver. The committee also invited David Bruce and William Batt to testify in secret.
In renewed air action over North Korea, U S Sabre jets destroyed one MiG and likely downed another near the Manchurian border. Capt. Brooks J Liles and Lt. John M Marvin each added to their score with a downed or probable victory.
A Southern Railway locomotive is expected to revive the Alexander County Railway Co operation today after its 44 ton Diesel electric engine overturned at Stony Point. Four crew members escaped with minor injuries, and damage is estimated at about 2500 dollars. In Greensboro the North Carolina Daughters of the American Revolution begin their annual convention with a banquet and assembly tonight led by Miss Gertrude Carraway of New Bern, vice president general. About 500 delegates attended the opening session earlier today.
The Frank W. LaMotte Co. of Columbia won a $215,000 contract from the State Highway Commission to build the deck and west end lighting system for the new $2,000, Congaree River Bridge in Columbia, S C.
State Senator Charles C. Moore said a new highway commissioner from the Seventh Judicial Circuit will be elected tomorrow at a meeting of Spartanburg Cherokee and Union delegations. The post replaces Dr. W K Gunter whose term ends April 15 under rotation the new commissioner will be from Spartanburg County.
Carolina Telephone and Telegraph Co plans to ask the State Utilities Commission for a 1.5 million dollar annual rate increase. The firm serves about 98 000 customers in eastern North Carolina and says the raise would net 900 000 dollars a year after taxes and expenses. The commission expects customers would pay 1.5 million dollars more annually. The company has received four rate increases in the past five years. TO STUDY STORE Raleigh Lt Gov H P Taylor to chair a seven member UNC trustees committee to study student supply stores across the three UNC units.
U S ambassador to Yugoslavia George W. Allen told Raleigh Rotary Club that Marshal Tito and Yugoslavia would aid the United States in a war with Russia. He cited Yugoslavia's 700,000 man army as reliable in fighting Russia and noted Russia would invade Yugoslavia to avoid a large enemy force on its flank. Allen is on vacation at his Durham home.
Local League of Women Voters hosts radio forums featuring four candidates for Democratic and Republican presidential nominations. First panel Friday night includes Rep. Winston Prouty for Eisenhower and Rep. Andrew Betts for Taft, with Ke fauver and Russell reps scheduled for April 4.
Charlie Leo Sink 40, formerly of High Point, was questioned in Asheboro over the death of Maggie Hunt Glenn 40 of Randleman. A bakery truck driver spotted smoke at dawn near a King Tut cabin where Glenn died. Sink, found with the stolen car keys and in a nearby cabin, was arrested and questioned as investigators pursue the death angle. The bed fire destroyed the bed but left the cabin intact. Police used tear gas and confiscated weapons as about 60 strikers gathered at Plant A of the Thomasville air company. Eight union members including Local 286 president Roy E. Byerly faced conspiracy and trespass charges after the melee. warrants were issued for another striker over resisting arrest and interfering with officers.
Panmunjom reports say Allied and Communist negotiators held an executive session to push a new attempt to resolve the stalemate in POW exchanges. U N staff filed a preliminary statement reacting to a March 5 proposal while both sides sought privacy to discuss day to day matters and potential adjustments.

State Medical Examiner G. T. Mann said a head with a bullet hole found March 13 on a hill farm near Amherst, Virginia, is that of James E. Staples, a Lynchburg taxi driver missing since December 4. Dental records and hairs from the head linked to Staples. the head was severed with an ax and a thigh bone fragment remained. no body trace found.
Frost hit the Piedmont and mountains raising concerns for peach trees while rivers remained high in South and North Carolina. Authorities urged moving livestock from lowlands as crests approached in Sandhills and rivers swelled near Camden and Columbia. Weather expected to clear briefly before more rain returns later in the week.
