Senate Passes Justice Department Bill in North Carolina

The North Carolina Senate approved a committee substitute creating a state department of justice. Senator Folger of Surry opposed and may seek reconsideration Monday. The measure consolidates the Bureau of Investigation and Identification under the attorney general and allows prosecutions at the request of district solicitors.

Negotiations Near End For Madrid Surrender

Reports from Hendaye and Madrid indicate final talks on Madrid's surrender to the Spanish Nationalists and peace in the civil war near completion. Swiss border guards reinforced as tensions rise

BERNE March 25 Orders calling up frontier troops to guard Switzerland's German border were executed after the government ordered all border posts reinforced. Mines at strategic points were being charged and basel trucks were requisitioned to move troops to garrisons along the Swiss German boundary as Basel authorities discussed the situation.

Sino Japanese battle grows in fury on multiple fronts

Shanghai dispatch reports over two million Chinese and Japanese troops in renewed, heavy fighting across three fronts along Chinese rivers and four more sectors. The heaviest clashes centered in Northern Kiangsi near Nanchang with Japanese forces advancing toward the city and mounting casualties, including thousands killed or wounded and many prisoners.

Revenue Commissioner A J Maxwell announced Jack Eugene Mosteller a 28 year old LeNOir police officer will join the highway patrol April 1 to replace Patrolman A B Smart killed in an automobile accident Major John Armstrong said Mosteller will be assigned to District D with headquarters at Charlotte.

Durand, the renegade of the Rockies, was killed by a self-inflicted shot after a nine day manhunt. He attempted to rob a Powell Wyoming bank after killing four pursuers and a 20 year old teller died in the attempt. A 17 year old boy Tipton Cox fired the fatal shot as Durand prepared to flee in Clarks Fork Canyon ending a brutal chase through Northwestern Wyoming.

February Export Month Promises Trade Advantage

Instant Death After Auto Hit Near Asheboro

Robert N. Henley a truck driver was instantly killed when struck by a car driven by Jacques Busbee of Jugtown on the highway south of Asheboro. Sheriff King said no charges would be filed and a hearing would occur early next week. Henley had borrowed a truck to fetch groceries and wood when he began crossing the highway and was struck by the northbound vehicle.
