Ski Bum Susi Rankin Chooses Freelife Over Security
Susi Rankin, 25, quit her Washington office job in 1979 to live as a ski bum at Sugar Mountain North Carolina. She works as a ski patrol working candidate earning about $1.60 an hour, plus overtime, and rents a $178 monthly apartment. She has skied from Colorado to North Carolina, hosts a room mate, and faces a lonely romance while weighing a settled life against constant travel.
