North Carolina’s 1817 aid for Udney Blakely’s education
State archives recount the 1817 NC action to educate Udney Maria Blakely, daughter of naval hero Capt. Johnston Blakely. Congress honored Blakely with a gold medal and NC funded her schooling, with initial confusion over annual sums and later confirmation of five year support at six hundred dollars per year.
