Inflation Battles Economic Experts Casting Wary Eye On Nixon Plans

New York AP reports that leading consultants warn Nixon spending could fuel inflation despite a policy to curb it. They cite rising public housing costs and a $2.8 billion pay raise for federal workers plus a $1.2 billion hike for military personnel as signals of a spending surge. Analysts say higher consumer income and rising business outlays threaten economic stability, challenging admin aims to reduce inflation. Pierre Rinfret and others criticize guidelines abandoned after Nixon’s announcement, arguing such moves spur price and wage increases. Commerce and SEC data later confirmed a 13.9 percent planned rise in business spending, prompting further criticism of policy choices.
