FBI said a bomb report on an Eastern Airlines jetliner who had departed Greensboro airport was under investigation late Saturday. Initial statements claimed the men responsible were joking, and they were not aboard the plane when it left the airport.
Aides accuse Gen William Westmoreland as critics say his promotion to Army Chief of Staff amounts to a recall. President Johnson had earlier promoted Westmoreland from commander of U S forces in Poa to Army Chief of Staff.
Viet Cong shelled Pleiku in the central highlands and sent a death by own action squad to attack the government radio station. Government troops repelled the force, killing three attackers. Infiltrators numbered six to twelve, armed with bazookas and small arms. Casualties were light, but several military trucks were damaged. Pleiku, 250 miles north of Saigon, had been contested since January.
