Lennie Rosenbluth of North Carolina fouled out with 1:45 left in regulation as the Tar Heels, missing a last shot, held on to beat Kansas after a 16 minute 45 second stretch without their All-American forward.
Elizabethtown reports Thomasville NC soldier Calon W. Whack, 23, held in Hardin County jail for arraignment on three murder charges after a duplex fire that killed his wife Lile Mae Whack and two children Richard and Walter. Det. Lt. Cecil Cubbage cited a lie detector exam and Whack statements claiming an argument preceded the blaze and an attempt to rescue his family.
Raleigh reports the General Assembly faces taxes and spending as top issues. Debates focus on how large a pay raise to grant teachers and state employees. Gov Hodges pledges leadership on increases, with discussions underway among state workers and education groups.
Vice President Nixon is treated at Walter Reed Army Hospital for what his office calls a touch of flu. Rose Woods said he entered last night and left this morning to attend a Mass for President Ramon Magsaysay before returning to the Capitol and hospital. Skofic apologized for the row blaming misunderstandings while Gina, then seven months pregnant, said she could not sing. A Christianity Today survey of 228 scientists found 36 affirm the bodily resurrection of Christ and 192 do not. The sample, drawn from 544 exposed to the teaching, shows few hold firm faith while many in liberal Protestant denominations deny or doubt the event.
