North Carolina Floats in Azalea Festival Parade

The state float from Washington represents NC forests and industries and will appear Saturday in Wilmington for the Azalea Festival. It will also travel to Rowan Bicentennial Salisbury April 14 and other events including Farmers' Day in Fairmont April 16 and Potato Festival in Elizabeth City May 30, among others.

Swine disease halts sales at four NC hog markets

Four North Carolina cash hog buying stations were quarantined as a vesicular exanthema outbreak prompted suspension of sales. Dr. H J Rollins, state veterinarian, said VE symptoms appeared in hogs moved from Smithfield to Fair Bluff Tabor City and Clarkton. Of 118 animals examined about a quarter showed foot or snout lesions typical of VE.

Senate kills bill to add judges while approving district redraw

In Raleigh the Senate Committee on Courts and Judicial Districts killed the House backed measure to add six regular Superior Court judges while approving a plan to redraw districts boosting total regular judges from 21 to 32. Gov. Umstead supported the House bill but signaled backing for the substitute only if it proves better. If the House persists, a two-thirds vote will be needed to push the measure to the Senate floor.
