Shanghai quiet after two days of chaos as troops hold outskirts
Shanghai reports a night of relative calm followed by renewed firing in the northern outskirts near the international settlement. Cantonese regulars entered the native city and restored a semblance of order after days of fighting looting and destruction. US Marines with mortars and machine guns posted at Markham road bridge near the bridge to deter possible blows from southern sympathizers. The position guards the bridge flanking the creek separating foreign forces from turbulent native areas and is shared with the British Coldstream Guards.
