Strikers To Return To Work At UNC Chapel Hill
RALEIGH AP Striking food service workers at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill are set to resume work Monday after Gov. Bob Scott agreed to their wage demands. He announced that state employees earning under 1.80 per hour would be raised to that level as of April 1. About 110 workers participated in a four week strike that shut three of four cafeterias, with Lenoir Hall reopening March 6 under police protection. Attorney Julius L. Chambers said the raise was the main factor in ending the dispute, and the governor noted the increase comes a year earlier than planned. A campus rally of about 500 people cheered the decision.
