Edmunds Act's Impact on Utah Voting and Mormon Church Policy
The Edmunds Act of March 22 1882 excluded bigamists from voting in Utah as Congress sought to curb polygamy. A five member commission oversaw the territory and by 1883 elections for a territorial delegate proceeded. The Mormon delegate won 23 000 to 4 000 over Gentiles. later the US Supreme Court upheld the act and the church issued a manifesto urging cessation of plural marriages.
