British forces repelled a major German assault along a 50 mile front from Sensee to Oise. Despite initial gains, Germans failed to seize planned objectives as British artillery and counterattacks checked advances and inflicted heavy losses on German units.
The war office reports the western front battle continued late last night from the Oise to the Sensee. British troops held the enemy in their positions as massed infantry offered remarkable targets for machine guns rifles and artillery. The enemy suffered very heavy losses and no serious attack had developed this morning though heavy fighting was expected.
Geneva reports a Monday British air raid on Mannheim Germany caused fires that raged for hours near factories. A powder factory and a gas plant exploded. Panic spreads with many residents fleeing to Switzerland, especially women and children. Berlin shows no move to negotiate as press voices aerial reprisal.
In Mechanicsville the preliminary for county meeting speakers from High Point townships staged an event under Miss Daisy Osborne. Washington March 22 A resolution by Senator New Indiana urged the war department to explain to the senate why it lists American casualties by name only without any other identifying information. The senate adopted the resolution today without a second vote.
