GOP Platform Opposes Student Busing In North Carolina
Winston-Salem AP reports North Carolina Republicans prepared to adopt a platform opposing involuntary cross busing of students. The document criticizes gasoline tax and license fee increases by the Democratic-dominated 1969 General Assembly and shifts toward regional universities, while not proposing tax cuts. Jim Holshouser faced no serious challenge for party chairman, with two Republicans filing to oppose him in the 44th House district. National chairman Morton defended the party’s stance on desegregation and noted Nixon’s support remains similar across regions.
