Berkeley nuclear physicist Dr. Ernest O. Lawrence, pioneer of the cyclotron, received the Sylvanus Thayer Award from President Eisenhower at West Point. Lawrence, director of UC Berkeley’s radiation laboratory since 1936, helped develop the first atomic bomb and led the Oak Ridge mass production program. He won the 1939 Nobel Prize in physics for the cyclotron and built multiple cyclotrons, aiding tritium isolation for hydrogen bomb work.

Unopposed nominees include Julian Frye High Point J E Jervis Asheville Carl Frye Plymouth Lewis Price Plymouth and J W Wolder Winston-Salem for secretary treasurer. Lloyd Oliver urged clean unions and support for Meany to rid organizations of crooks and racketeers. Other speakers were William Pollock Textile Workers Union and Eugene Moats Meany aide.
