After a rough stretch UNC Chapel Hill beat Kentucky 79 to 72 to win the Eastern Regional and reach the NCAA championship round in Atlanta. Guard John Kuester scored 19 points and 13 of 14 from the line while running the four corner offense as Phil Ford was limited by injury.
Dean Smith corrected a misstatement about Olympic selections as North Carolina beat Kentucky 79 to 72. Kuester led UNC with clutch free throws and endgame points while Givens and Robey battled as Kentucky closed within one late before UNC sealed it at the line.
UNC Charlotte defeats Michigan with a 75 to 68 score in a midweek college basketball matchup. Marquette tops Wake Forest 82 to 68 in another regional game.
Wake Forest, once the tournament darling, fell 82 to 68 to Marquette as the Demon Deacons failed to sustain their late surge. Coach Carl Tacy blamed foul trouble and missed opportunities, noting Wake's halftime lead and scoring drought after intermission as turning points.
