Delivery System Controversy Delays Postal Strike
Washington AP reports the National Association of Letter Carriers postponed a threatened nationwide walkout over the Kokomo plan, delaying decision on its national rollout. Testing continues in Kokomo Indiana and Portland Oregon, with Providence Rhode Island tests canceled after Providence workers threatened a wildcat strike. The plan would base route efficiency on computer assessed factors and could cut about 15000 jobs if adopted. Union president James H. Rademacher vows to oppose and insists carriers must not bear increased mail delivery cuts. Postmaster General Bailor says adoption hinges on test results and rate control.
