U S Command reports 351 American battlefield deaths in Vietnam last week, edging total American dead to 10,112 since negotiations began and 33,063 in over eight years of war. Wounded reach 1,401 as South Vietnamese losses climb to 325 killed and 1,156 wounded amid heavy Viet Cong/North Vietnamese response near Da Nang.
Secretary of Defense Melvin R. Laird testified that the modified Safeguard antiballistic missile system will deter a Soviet nuclear attack by providing a shield over the United States and its allies. He described the program as essential to national security and emphasized its defensive intent in the face of Cold War tensions.

A chartered DCR plane carrying 27 people including 24 passengers from the West Tennessee Sportsmen Association crashed while landing in heavy fog at New Orleans International Airport. Coroner Dr. Charles B. Odom said 16 were dead and all bodies likely removed. Eleven survivors were taken to Ochsner Hospital, with three admitted.
An Ilyushin 18 aircraft carrying 101 people from a Moslem pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia crashed and burned at Aswan airport in upper Egypt. Prime Minister John Gorton faced two questions on personal conduct as Australia’s House rejected an investigation into scandal charges involving Liza Minnelli. A Liberal MP, Edward H. St. John, leveled a new accusation about a late night ride to the U S Ambassador Crook’s residence with a teenage girl, which Gorton denied. He said he gave the girl a ride home, visited Crook’s residence briefly, and stayed about 30 minutes. Gorton defended himself vigorously against Minnelli related charges and called the rumor campaign scurrilous.
Senator Richard B. Russell announced he will immediately begin cobalt treatments for a malignant lung tumor. The 71 year old Georgia Democrat, president pro tempore and Appropriations chair, will continue serving in the Senate as doctors advised against surgery. He has long battled emphysema and says he remains able to work while undergoing treatment.
