Woman's Courage Stops Eugene Gunman in Downtown Standoff
In Eugene Oregon a gunman held a family captive for hours and wounded a college student before police shot and killed him. Mrs Marvin Keeler 22 seized the pistol from the gunman as he faced officers and her husband drove the escape car toward the police. The suspect Harvey LeRoy Baker 23 also known as David LeRoy Latham had a prior prison record. He fired at officers and at bystanders including Milton Seligman 29 a University of Oregon PhD candidate who was wounded in the neck but recovering. Police credited the Keelers with thwarting the attack and ending the standoff.

One Killed And Two Hurt In Head-On Crash Near Salisbury
A head-on collision between a station wagon and an unmarked Highway Patrol car near Salisbury left Curtis Bush, 27, of Kinards, dead. Sgt. Marvin Fields, 44, and Sgt. Harbin, 92, were injured along with another officer. Fields was pursuing another vehicle. the chase ended when Fields’ car swerved into oncoming traffic. Injured were treated at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. Patrol investigates cause and vehicle involved.

75th Birthday Is Celebrated By Earl Warren
Chief Justice Earl Warren marked his 75th birthday with a party at Columbia Country Club in Maryland attended by about 72 guests including family friends and Supreme Court officials. President Johnson visited briefly to extend good wishes. Five of the Warren children were present. son Robert stayed in California due to illness. John Daly, Warren’s son in law and a television host, hosted the event with guests from the court and former justices.
