Mrs Hancock Dies At 69 In High Point Area

Obituary notices list Mrs Alma Cressell Hancock 69 of Route 5 died Saturday in Radford Virginia hospital while visiting relatives. Survived by husband Cecil Hancock. two sons, seven daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral arrangements incomplete. Also noted are Deborah Sue Haynes 11 dead on arrival after accident and Mona Pennington Riddle 44 of Spartanburg visiting High Point died. Dr John Wesley Dyer 88 longtime physician died in Maryfield Nursing Home.

Kirkman Rites Set Sunday for Local Veteran

Edgar Clyde Kirkman 72 of 2206 Palmer St died Friday at High Point Memorial Hospital. A WWII Army veteran born July 11 1904 in Guilford County he worked at Hatteras Yacht Co until 1967 and belonged to Weld Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife Helen J Kirkman a sister Mrs Eunice B McGhee of California. Burial in an area cemetery with services led by Rev Bobby L Loving.

Wrecks Leave Several Hurt in High Point Area

Three people were injured, none seriously, when a car left E. Green Drive near New Street and overturned at 12 30 a.m. Driver Terry Hood, 24, said an oncoming blinding car caused the crash. Injured were Steve Hood, 15, and Lawrence Mishoe, 14, all residents of E Green. Across the city twelve people were injured in Friday crashes, with six hospital treated and none admitted.

Helms Helps With Debt Aid Letter To Flaherty Supporters

North Carolina Republicans sent about 9000 letters from Senator Jesse Helms asking recipients to donate ten dollars to campaign candidate David Flaherty. Flaherty, defeated in 1976 by Jim Hunt, struggles with debt after returning to work at Brayhill Industries in Lenoir. He says campaign costs crippled his finances and family time. Helms did not draft the letter but signed it after requests from state Republicans.

Robbery strikes several vehicles in High Point area

Police report multiple thefts including a 1966 model car valued at 500 taken from Adams Millis lot. Driver Mike Wayne Hagg 28 charged with auto larceny and reckless driving after stop at Chandler Avenue and Alfred Place. Other owners reported vehicles, CB radios, batteries, and a bicycle stolen from homes and lots across town. Arrests included Austin, Kincade, Caldwell, Parker, and Little on various charges.

Unemployment in Guilford and Nearby Counties Rises

January labor data show Guilford County with 153 474 in the labor force and 143 355 employed while 10 119 seek work. Unemployment claims reach 6 907 with 60 percent filed in Greensboro, amid seasonally higher totals and cold weather slowing industries in Guilford Randolph and Davidson counties report slight shifts in jobless figures and job seekers.

Dwelling Permits Rise in Guilford County January Report

Guilford County issued 139 building permits in February totaling over 2 million dollars. Of these 45 new dwellings valued at 1.52 million were in rural areas outside High Point and Greensboro. Non residential permits included office structures and a storage building, with repairs and mobile home, sign, and pool permits also noted.
