North Carolina and South Carolina Facilities Face Cuts
A Pentagon plan would close or scale back about 80 bases nationwide, including Navy facilities in North and South Carolina. In North Carolina the Naval Reserve Facility in Washington will close by June 30, and Cherry Point's Naval Air Rework Facility will reduce operations by May 20. In South Carolina the Anderson and Florence Naval Reserve Facilities will close by June 30, and the Georgetown and Greenwood sites will also be shut or reduced. Overall, about 2,100 personnel may transfer from support to combat roles as studies assess local impact, with $56 million in annual savings forecast. The plan affects 74 Navy installations and six other agency sites, with nine destroyer-type costs equated to the projected savings. Key sites like Key West, Memphis, and Corpus Christi will be examined, though Key West may stay open at reduced activity.
