An Eastern Airlines flight from Newark to Boston made a safe landing after a mile high cockpit struggle left copilot James E. Hartley dead and a passenger wounded. John J. DiVivo, 27, was charged with murder in East Boston for the death amid a guard and hospital treatment for injuries. Pilot Robert Wilbur Jr. 35, and DiVivo both survived in satisfactory condition.

UNC Chapel Hill students approved continuing compulsory fees for The Daily Tar Heel by a four to one margin. Unofficial totals show 4,817 to retain and 1,078 to end the fee, with absentee ballots pending and a potential runoff for editor.
Mail carriers in the New York metropolitan area began a strike for higher pay, defying federal law. The regional postal director reported 85 percent effectiveness, halting mail to and from the city. The walkout started at midnight in Manhattan and the Bronx and spread to Brooklyn Queens Richmond Nassau Suffolk counties and Paterson New Jersey. Harold R. Larsen, director of the New York postal region, said mail to and from the city would be halted immediately.
Asst. Atty. Gen. William D. Ruckelshaus sought a temporary injunction to halt the walkout citing federal law. Pickets clogged entrances at the New York General Post Office and nearby facilities while some workers crossed lines and others joined strikers crippling mail in Nassau and Suffolk counties.
