Credit-tightening push may lift discount rate soon

Washington officials foresee a possible rise in the Federal Reserve discount rate after banks increased the prime to 7 4 percent. The move would narrow the gap with the current 12 1/2 percent discount rate, limiting bank borrowings from the Fed and cooling the boom. The higher cost of credit could hurt housing and small business while potentially slowing plant and equipment outlays, though some expect postponed expansions to aid government aims.
