He is son of Mrs. Melvina Martin of High Point NC and was educated at NC State College. He joined the U S Army July 1941 and became a second lieutenant in the Engineer Corps at Fort Belvoir in September 1942. He served overseas and joined the North Africa invasion on November 8, 1942.
