Detroit March 18 AP Senator Reed opens the million-dollar libel suit defense stating Aaron Sapiro collected over 1 million from cooperative groups he promoted and acted unprofessionally in soliciting business. He pledged evidence the libel articles were printed in good faith. Cameron, editor of the Dearborn Independent, testifies as first witness.
Shanghai dispatch reports Nanking likely to fall with Cantonese forces closing in from the Yangtze. Shantung troops offer little resistance while Lishui and Wukiiang fall. Shanghai–Nanking railway disrupted near Soochow. Westerners prepare evacuations though not ordered yet.

Chairman Senator Mark Squires said land acquisition and pledges may begin, after a luncheon with the Asheville chamber of commerce celebrating a $2,000,000 park appropriation bill.
Jackson Mississippi March 18 AP At the death of Governor Henry L Whitfield Lieutenant Governor Dennis Murthree of Pittsborough automatically became chief executive of the state. Murthree 41 a newspaper publisher and former state legislator has served as president of the state senate for two years. He is married with four children.
Jackson and Columbus mourn as Governor Henry L. Whitfield dies at 4 41 am after a bone cancer ordeal that followed a leg amputation on November 30. Mrs Whitfield was at his side as he passed unconscious for hours with a brief conscious smile yesterday. Construction lies in state at the capitol before a funeral at Mississippi State College for Women with Dr W H Hewitt leading services.
Robert I. Harris president of the Retail Merchants Association stated the group will not enter the upcoming election race. He said members will vote as individuals to support a business like government and reduce taxes, while promising a legal challenge over a city privilege tax due June 1.
A. J. Koonce of Yow Funeral Home left this afternoon to attend the funeral of his grandmother Mrs. Henry Koonce who died recently at her Lexington residence. The rites were to be held at Beulah Reformed church this afternoon at 2 o clock.
A C Brown of Grand Rapids secretary of the National Alliance of Furniture Manufacturers suffered a stroke while awaiting a jury verdict in a federal antitrust case. He was rushed to Detroit for treatment as the jury deliberated on the fate of 72 manufacturers and 57 individuals accused of forming a trust covering about 75 percent of the nation’s bedroom and dining room furniture.

Miss Imogene Hughes a 31 year old secretary and Rev Richard Jordan 65 her self styled spiritual adviser were bound over to the grand jury on two thousand dollar bonds each after a preliminary hearing in Atlanta. Jordan admitted the charges while Hughes faced larceny after trust from two physicians.
The boy Frederick Buhl Jr. claimed a dramatic train robbery near Alton Illinois in 1923 with many accomplices and $300000 buried in a graveyard. Police found no such record and Dr A A Brill labeled the boy a pathological liar, noting the tale stems from pseudologia fantastica to satisfy an ego.
