Vietnamese DMZ fighting leaves heavy toll on both sides
North Vietnamese troops struck twice along the southern DMZ near Gio Linh and the Rockpile. In the dawn assault an estimated 400 attackers overwhelmed a South Vietnamese outpost, killing 18 soldiers and wounding 95, while four enemy dead were reported. Later, a Marine patrol four miles west fought a daylong clash that killed six Marines and wounded 25 as enemy losses remained unknown. Civilian and base shelling reports followed, with 15 houses burned in Vi Thanh and 5 civilians killed. Helicopters and artillery supported efforts as total helicopter losses climbed to 2,430 for the war.
