A severe hail and wind storm swept central South Carolina last night killing Buck Coats aged 60 and Ree Ann Gary age 3 as a cement house collapsed near Ridge Spring. The storm damaged many frame buildings across York MacCormick Lexington Saluda and Edgefield counties and halted traffic on U S 1 near Batesburg Ridge Spring where five inches of hail blanketed the roadway.

Fire crews in Florida and Georgia battled two large wildfires with about 47 000 acres charred and more than 400 men on the lines. Officials said artificial rainmaking may be tried if clouds form, as backfires and lines were drawn to halt the Foley and Madison Taylor fires. Ten Die Violently In State In Weekend
