Coal Operators Told To Reach Agreement
In New York on March 13 an official of the United Mine Workers urged southern coal operators to negotiate a wage agreement rather than extend collective bargaining. Sam Caddy, UMW District 16 leader, criticized the Southern Coal Producers Association proposal to adjourn talks for three months after the war and warned that the Little Steel formula would erode bargaining rights. He called for resisting attempts to end collective bargaining and pressed for a $2 daily wage increase with various protections for miners and storemen, as work stoppages loomed if no contract is reached.

The current five percent levy could rise to seven percent, and 1942 collections benefited from a boom while unemployment payments rose as a result.
